Mother of the Bride/Groom Dress: 6 Essential Shopping Tips

Whether you're the mother of the bride or mother of the groom, you'll have some special moments on the wedding day! You may have not shopped for a dress this important since your own wedding. Here are some tips to get you going.

"Think of the wedding as a production, in which you have a leading role."

1. Communication is key

Talk to the bride. Get a sense of her vision for the day.

2. Get Going

Start shopping as early as possible, but not until the bride has chosen her gown and the bridesmaids dresses.

3. Make a Match

Look at what the bride and bridal party are wearing and follow their lead as far as formality.

4. Find your Hue

Decide what color you want to wear. Start looking with several color preferences in mind. Stay away from white, cream, or ivory. The best mother of the bride and grrom dress compliment the mom's coloring and don't clash with the wedding party.

5. Compromise with the Bride

Get an idea of what styles the bride has in mind. If she wants you to wear something you are not happy with, let her know. It's her day, but you have to feel comfortable.

6. Talk to the Mother of the Groom

The mother of the bride should consult with the mother of the groom once her she's selected her dress, informing her of color and formality.
